Argument Essay

Quick Write:
I believe that the public school education in the Bronx is the best it can be. It's proven that public school education is better and more effective than some charter/ private schools. This is probably because of all the work and homework we get according to the curriculum.

Mindset (chapter 1)

Quick Write:
If I can change anything about myself as a student it will be procrastination. I would stop leaving things for last minute so that I won't have a lot to do right before it's due. I want to get to the point where I can have it done way before it's due.

Reflection:
It's all about effort. For example I want to change a certain characteristic about myself so I have to put in the effort to change it. Which ties in with Mindset because she said "They knew that human qualities, such as intellectual skills, could be cultivated through effort. And that's what they were doing---getting smarter." To me the author is saying that because they used effort to do whatever it was like deciding not to procrastinate is what makes you smarter.

GRIT

Quick Write:
I failed my first two years of high school because of different reasons. Seeing myself fail really bothered me because I was always an honor student. I got a little discouraged but then I picked myself back up. I changed my school and once I got to Crotona Academy I made up my mind to pass my classes with 90s like I'm used to.

Notes on Grit:
  • Passion and perseverance
  • motivation
  • inversely related to talent
  • growth mindset
  • willing to fail to start over again
Reflection:
At first I didn't have GRIT. I didn't take failure easily. If I failed I would given up because I let things like failure discourage me. I used to be like this for a while, when my father passed away it got worst. But I ended up changing my ways. I used my obstacles to help me push further.
For example, I failed terribly my first two years of high school but I didn't leave it that way. I transferred to a new school (Crotona Academy High School) and made up my mind that I was going to be the honor student. Even now that I go through different situations in life I stay motivated and focused. But if I had happened to fail, I just do it over better than before.
In order to develop GRIT you have to have a mindset made up for it. You have to be willing to fail and start over again like Angela Lee Duckworth said in the video. You have to have patience and passion for it. Set goals and become an over achiever. Just don't let anything get you down. This class can help you develop GRIT because this class is all about learning and studying the mindsets of people.  It makes me want to develop more GRIT.

Survey

Quick Write:

How I graded myself on my first post

Survey Question:
1. We are born smart or dumb, and there is nothing we can do about it.
I strongly disagreed with this question because babies aren't born smart or dumb, babies actually have the ability to learn. You learn something new everyday. Plus they get older and can go to school and learn new things. Just because a baby knows more than another doesn't mean their smarter or dumber than the other baby, everyone learns at their own pace.

DOK Question:
what happens if you were born smart or dumb?
Quick Write:
I would grade myself a 3.5 in learning outcomes because I got most of my work done. I'm just missing one post, I started it but I haven't published it yet. In Ideas I would give myself a 4 because I write exactly what I think. For grammar I rate myself a 4 because everything is spelled correctly and my punctuation is good. I was rate myself a 4 on effort because I try my hardest on every post.

Mental Toughness

Quick Write:

I don't know what it means to be mentally tough. So I don't really have an answer to this quick write.

Questions:

1) Three quality of mental toughness is; Resist the urge to give up in the face of failure, remain focused and determined when pursuing your goals, and emerge from adversity even stronger than before.
2) Psychological resilience is when you don't allow your mind to give up on things easily. You continue to strive and if you do fail, you try even harder.
3) Gratitude and Generosity are important components of mental toughness because you learn to be grateful, and appreciative for where you are now in life with the will power to grow.

Quick Write:

I think I'm tough to a certain extent. After a while of trying I tend to give up and get frustrated; but I don't give up that easily i'll try a couple of time if there's no difference and it just gives me headaches I just leave it alone.

Essential Question:

How would you evaluate a person's amount of mental toughness?

A Little About Myself

My name  is Maylene. I'm 18 years old and I go to Crotona Academy. I'm one of 3 sisters, one older and one younger. I'm very family oriented and I love my friends dearly. I live on Burnside Ave. in the Bronx. It's your regular neighborhood, you have the drug dealers on the corner but you also have people who are trying to do better in life. I want to learn all there is to know on psychology. I want to learn how the mind works. I especially want to know wether or not the adult and the children's mind is different? And in what ways?
