My idea for my I-search paper is Dreaming. Whether or not everyone dreams, how the brain works in our dream state and what causes and effects are dreaming.
 These questions help me with my research because it gives me key points to focus on. Instead of being all over the place I have questions to guide me.

Does everyone Dream?

Quick Write:
I personally think everyone dreams but may not remember. Some people remember every single dream they dreamt, while others tend to forget by the morning. They're some that just remember dreams that strike something with them, whether if it's a terrible nightmare or a beautiful fairy tale. I'm one of those, I only remember dreams that either really scare me, have family involved or seem to be fantasy like.

Research: Does everyone dream?

• Yes. Laboratory studies have shown that we experience our most vivid dreams during a type of sleep called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep.
• During REM sleep the brain is very active, the eyes move back and forth rapidly under the lids, and the large muscles of the body are relaxed. REM sleep occurs every 90 - 100 minutes, 3 to 4 times a night, and lasts longer as the night progresses. 
•  The final REM period may last as long as 45 minutes. Less vivid dreams occur at other times during the night.
• Dreams are useful in learning more about the dreamer's feelings, thoughts, behavior, motives, and values. Many find that dreams can help them solve problems. Further, artists, writers, and scientists often get creative ideas from dreams.

December 11th

Journal Prompt:
"And right then I submitted. I would go to the war -- I would kill and maybe die -- because I was embarrassed not to." I choose this line because it tells us the decision he's making. He decided to go to the war, not because he thought it was the right thing to do but because he didn't want to be embarrassed. He allowed other people to impact his decision. I honestly don't agree with his reasoning because you should never allow someone else's opinion to influence your decision. He should of gone with his gut feeling; if his gut feeling was to go to the war then I would of agreed but we all know he really wanted to run.

December 10th

Journal Prompt:
"Intellect had come up against emotion. My conscience told me to run, but some irrational and powerful force was resisting, like a weight pushing me toward the war." Tim is stating that twenty years ago he was fighting with himself. He was stuck between what he should do and what his decision would be. Like he saids his conscience was telling him to run away but some strange force was telling him to do what he was called for. I think he should just go with his gut feeling, whether that's running away or going to the war. He should just make his decision without interference of anybody else's opinions.

December 9th

Journal Prompt:
"I couldn't tell up from down. I was just falling, and late in the night I'd lie there watching weird pictures spin through my head." I choose this quote because it really stood out to me. He's describing how he felt at that moment. He was pretty much going crazy, he felt like his life was just going down hill and fast. I say this because he saids himself that he's falling and a lot of different things are going on in his head.

December 8th

Journal Prompt:

"I was too good for this war. Too smart, too compassionate, too everything. It couldn't happen. I was above it." I choose this quote because it shows what type of person he was twenty years ago as well how he feels about being drafted for the war. This quote proves him to be cocky and boastful. He's telling us that he's basically to good for this war. It helps develop the  character in the story.

Journal Prompt:
"Show ma a hero and I'll write you a tragedy." This quote is saying that every successful person has a sad story. I agree because everyone has a background and it's mostly a rough one.For example, Hamlet is born into royalty; He's a prince. Hamlet's father was murdered by his uncle which was suppose to make him king but instead his uncle took the throne. After Hamlet's father's ghost told him how he died, he takes action in his own hands which ends in death. Everyone in the story ends up dying.

Journal Prompt:
"A man doesn't become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall." I believe this quote is saying that a man isn't a man to look up to if he can't admit to his mistakes and fix them. I strongly agree with this quote because in order to move on to better things you have to admit to your wrong doings. For example, we look at our father's as our hero but they wouldn't get that title if they constantly making mistakes they don't own up to.

"the pains we inflict upon ourselves hurt most of all." This quote means that the pain you cause yourself hurts more than any other pain. I definitely agree with this quote because nobody knows yourself more than you. You start over thinking, put yourself in a depression and or harm yourself which cuts deeper than a knife.

Journal Prompt:
I would interview my three favorite artist of all time; Michael Jackson, Aaliyah and Biggie Smalls. I would ask them about their up bringing and what motivated them. I would also ask them if they came across any obstacles and if so how did they over come it. After all of that I would ask to sing/rap a song with them because I love them so much. Performing with them would of been a dream come true.

I relate to Hamlet when it comes to his feelings towards his mother's new marriage. I don't like my mother being with another man. It caused our relationship to go downhill. But what I don't relate with is how he doesn't confront her about it. He doesn't take control of what's his either with I don't relate to.

Action Plan for Hamlet

Journal Prompt:
Hamlet should follow his gut instinct. If he feels like his father's death was an inside job then he should try to collect evidence. Sit back and figure out how he's going to figure out who killed his father and how they're going to confess. I just think it's best that he has evidence to support his suspicions before making any other move. After that he can get revenge if he wants to.

Favorite Language

Journal Prompt:
ACT 1.2.133-164: "But break, my heart, for I must hold my tongue." I choose this line because I can relate to how he feels here the most. Hamlet is having a hard time accepting is mother marriage with his uncle after the death of his father. He wants to say something about it but feels like it's best if he holds his tongue. I lost my father as well and till this day I don't accept my mom's new boyfriend. But unlike Hamlet I don't have any hair on my tongue so I say what's ever on my mind.

Journal Prompt:
I like Hamlet, he hasn't give me a reason to dislike him. He's very over protective with his mother because he doesn't want her being with his uncle.  He wants to better himself by continuing school, even though no one else wants him to. I also love the fact that he keeps his father alive, which I can relate to. It's not easy letting go a parent. He just need some support, some sympathy and he would be okay.

I observed Kenny, Alexis, Raphael, and Matthew's poster. I liked the way everyone wrote their opinion. But one thing they could of worked on paying closer attention to what the poem was saying because someone wrote that King Claudius wants Hamlet to go to school but he actually doesn't.

The only standards my mother has for me is to do good in school, get good grades and become somebody in life. She just wants me to succeed at whatever it is I want to do. She also excepts me to respect her, myself and our family values. She just wants me to be an independent woman.

Ghost

Journal Prompt:
Ghost is an apparition of a dead person that is believed to appear or become manifest to the living, typically as a nebulous image. I don't necessarily believe in ghost but i do believe in spirits. Spirits are the nonphysical part of a person that is the seat of emotions and character; the soul. I say this because ghost are usually used as a dead person coming to haunt you. While spirits are the souls of a person.

Grief

Journal Prompt:
Grief is sorrow, especially caused by some one's death. So with that being said I'm neutral. It's good to cry and let your feelings out but at the same time you can become depressed it you allow yourself to. I say this because it brings closure if you allow it to and it could also cause more pain. I know how this feels from personal experience. My father passed away close to six years ago and i grieved so much that it caused me to get depressed until I learned how to cope.

Impact!

Journal Prompt:
Selena the movie starts by showing Selena and her childhood. It shows how her father forced them to become a band and have hour long practices. They didn't like the idea at all but it molded them to who they became. It made Selena the queen of tejano music. Selena y Los Dinos had number one hits and she won awards and everything. If it wasn't for her father's nagging and vision they wouldn't of made it to the top like they did.

Thinker or Doer?

Journal Prompt:
I'm a bit of both. Most of the time I think before I do anything. There's barely a time I do something without thinking. They go hand in hand to me. For example, If my friends want to go out and do something I'm not necessarily comfortable with, I'll think before making a decision. If I didn't I would  have to suffer the consequences.

Revenge

Journal Prompt:
Revenge is pay back. It's sort of coming back for someone that hurt you. You intentionally want to make the person feel bad for what they did to you. You can kill a hater with your success or actually do something mean to hurt them. That's what revenge is all about harming someone.

"Reflection"

Journal Prompt:
I didn't have any confusions or questions about the final assignment.

Final Assignment:
     "My Last Duchess" by Robert Browning is a monolog/poem. It's about a Duke describing his last wife from a painting he has to the servant of the count's daughter he's planning to marry next. But while talking about his last duchess he indirectly shows us the type of person he really is. Which is crazy and controlling.
     Lines 45-47 reveal that the Duke is controlling. It specifically says, "I gave commands, then all smiles stopped together." Which prove that whatever he said had to be done and it was. It also reveals how crazy he is. You can infer that he either killed his last duchess or had her sent away. Especially when he says, "Then all smiles stopped together. There she stands as if she was alive." Browning first mentioned this in line 2 and repeated this towards the end of the poem. He put so much emphasis on that line so that we can see how much of a mad man he really is. From the beginning to now the duke character develops from an insecure husband to a psyhco controlling husband. Lines 45-47 just gives us the conformation of what we thought earlier in the poem that the Duke is a crazy, controlling, freak.

"School Shootings"

Journal Prompt:
I think there's a lot behind school shootings. It might be jealousy, hatred, depression, or the reaction to bullying. I believe that the kids who shoot up the schools have something going on in their lives that they can't handle or they just grew some type of hatred towards a specific person. You can't really pin point the exact reason behind it unless you know the persons background, medical history, and things of that nature. Many of the previous shooters had some type of issues. So like I mentioned before there's many different reasons someone could react in a terrifying school shooting.

"Profiling the duke"

Journal Prompt:
The most striking characteristic about the Duke is that he's very PETTY! He's so full of himself and doesn't care about anyone else feelings. He talks about his wife like she's a random girl from the street. No matter what your going through, you should never put someone else down to be happy. But that's exactly what he does which makes him petty.

"Reliability"

Journal Prompt:
My opinion of the Duke's reliability as a narrator is that he's not completely reliable. He's speaking from anger and jealousy. You can't fully trust someone who throws subs about another person.

"Uncertain"

Journal Prompt:
The Duke is a complicated character. One minute he shows insecurity and the next he's cocky and full of himself. It's sort of like he has two different personalities. The Duchess is an out-going person. She's very flirtatious and care free. She doesn't let anyone steal her happiness. What I'm still uncertain about is why she constantly looks for happiness outside her relationship. How does he treat her that makes her ride off with another man? Why does the Duke act so bipolar?

Lines 9 and 10

Journal Prompt:
I don't know what lines 9 and 10 mean. It reads, "But to myself they turned (since none puts by The curtain I have drawn for you, but I)" I have no clue what the author is saying about the portrait and what he's saying about the Duke. I just don't know what it means, its confusing me little. It threw me off.

First Impression

Journal Prompt:
The first impression I got from the Duke is he's sort of a jerk (M). He doesn't show sympathy that his wife died but he's putting up a show for the other person in the room (E). He's full of himself and doesn't care for anyone else (A). I feel like he has a lot of maturing to do and for that same reason he shouldn't be a ruler of anything (L).

Subs

Journal Prompt:
"Subs" is the short way of saying subliminal (M). We use the word when someone is indirect (E). For example, Someone might say, oh she's lose, she's a hood rat, ect. But won't address the person they referring to. It's a subliminal because the person isn't aware of what the other person is saying about them (A). In my opinion subs shouldn't be used, people should be straight forward (L).

A Well Organized Parargraph

Journal Prompt:
My all time favorite food would have to be Lasagna(M). It's my favorite because I'm a huge pasta fan. I like all the layers of pasta, meat, cheese and ragu sauce(E). I love this dish so much that I enjoy making it, it comes second nature to me(A). It can be a hundred degrees out but I would still use the oven, only because it's lasagna(L).

One activity that I felt I nailed was the selfie poster. It describes me and my ambition. A lesson that could of been better for me was the macklemore video. I liked it but I felt like we should of done it differently.

Being a female affects my life because there's certain thing I'm limited to, and there's certain things I'm expected to do. I feel like I'm expected to cook, clean, and ect. They expect you to be a house wife. But what if I want to be the one working. I love being independent and society expects us to cater to our men, which is not a problem but I'm not the type to sit home and do nothing.

My favorite possession has to be my phone. I say this because my phone holds all my personal information, it allows me to communicate with my family and friends, and it holds all my memories. I also use it as entertainment. I can play games on it, listen to music and use different social media apps. Everything I need is on my phone and that's why I can't live without it.

My plans for the exit project is to rewrite my very own ending to the book. I didn't like how it ended, so I want to change it to my satisfaction. It shows how my critical thinking skills grew by using the things I learned from "Mindset" and "1984".

I wasn't surprised that the Party let Winston and Julia lived. I inferred that he was going to live. But I was surprised he betrayed Julia and Julia betrayed him. It's crazy how they don't recognize each other. But I'll rather live like that than kill myself or have my life taken away.

I think the novel will end okay for Winston. I think O'Brian will spare his life. They would brain wash him and change his whole appearance. I don't think he would get killed because in the book it saids that they have a love hate relationship. O'Brian also saids that Winston reminds him of himself.

I relate to both actually. I'm a mixture of both. I'm a go-getter like Julia, but I'm also a thinker, I over think like Winston. So I'm stuck in between.

I don't think I can change society alone, I can voice my opinion but that doesn't nessacarily mean I can make a difference. But I do think I can change society if I hand help. If I had a group of people on my side we can make a change.

I believe that Winston's world can really happen in today's society but only to a certain extent. I don't think it would get as far as the Party took it.

Final Reflection:
In my personal experience, I haven't felt that my privacy was invaded. But there are places like my building, stores, etc. that have cameras that watch your every move. Sometimes it isn't fair. But in certain cases its acceptable. For example, I recently lost a friend and they saw everything that happened through the store and building cameras. If they use it for things like this than it's ok but if it's just to watch our every move I feel like something needs to change. In Winston and the lawyer's case their rights and privacy was violated and I wouldn't want that for anyone else.

Does the future of the society depend on the proles? No. The proles might be 85% of the population but they're ignorant. They don't think, they don't question, they just go along with the flow. Since they have all they need they don't worry about how the government is ruling the country.

Proles don't fear anything. They're left to themselves, they will still live the same way from generation to generation and from century to century, working, having children and eventually dying. They wouldn't rebel because they think the world couldn't be different. I agree with this quote because in the book the Party doesn't pay any mind to them but there's so many of them that they have the power to rebel but choose not to because they don't think there's anything wrong with the way their living.

I can't interpret this quote because I don't know what the destruction of words mean. So it's hard for me to interpret it.

Final Reflection:
A prole is a poor person. They don't really matter because they are low class people. They don't get watched or heard by the thought police and the party pays them no mind.

History as construct

You don't know that everything your learning in History is true. The person who wrote the textbooks could be lying and we would never know. We just go by what we read or see because we weren't living in that time period to differentiate the truth from a lie.

Final Reflection:
My opinion about changing history remains the same. I personally think you can't change history. Even though in 1984 by George Orwell they changed everything including dates, predictions, and what they thought was facts. But I don't believe people take the time to change every aspect of history today.

The Hate

Quick Write:
To me hate is a very strong word. Its when you really really dislike someone to the point where your disgusted of them. You can't stand to see them or be around them. Hate can be caused by jealousy, envy, a disagreement or a conflict. It can be triggered by many different things. It can be a motivator for someone who hates but for me it isn't. I don't hate on anyone so thats why it really doesn't motivate me.

Final Reflection:
Hate puts people into a fixed mindset. It tampers with their emotions also. It can cause them to break down or act out. Acting out can cause more hate. More hate leads to rivalries and revenge.

"Nothing was your own except the few cubic centimeters inside your skull" Winston saids this because every single thing you did was  watched. You couldn't say anything you wanted, you couldn't keep things like a diary and you couldn't go certain places. You were controlled by big brother and the thought police.

Conquering the Assignment

Quick Write:
What helped me the most with writing my argument essay was the class lessons on how to structure the essay. Also the re introductions to writing intros and conclusion. This helped me feel more confident writing argument essays. It also helped me realize I have to take my time and put my effort.  To me every strategy we used in class helped me one way or another.

Power through Psychology

It's a very depressing environment. Everything is dark and smelling. There's soldiers walking around. You can't even think in peace without getting caught by the thought police. Its just a world full of hate. I think it got that way because of who became ruler and also because of the mindset of the people.

Final Reflection:
The commercial was so depressing until the girl smashed the tv. She was trying to break the hypnotism, and change there mindset. 1984 was the inspiration of the commercial. Everyone is being controlled by the guy on the tv until the girl broke the chain. It was trying to convince people to buy the computer because it would get them out of that state of mind.

I said I disagree because you can think of an idea without saying it to someone. But for it to be an idea I learned yesterday that it has to be written or said not just thought of.


Final Reflection:
Words are a form of expression. They give meaning to the things we say or write. Without words we wouldn't be able to have a conversation or write a letter or learn anything new for that matter. Our vocabulary would never grow, which would stop our IQ from growing also. We'll be nothing.

Final Reflection:
The government should use technology (surveillance, communications, spying methods) in order to ensure stability, peace and order throughout the country. 
 I strongly disagree with this statement because they're watching everyones every move. There's no freedom. I just won't feel comfortable being watched I don't know about anyone else. But if it comes down to using surveillance to catch a killer that different. It's okay to use it then but not on a regular basis.

This song relates to mindset in so many way. Estelle and Jamal have growth mindsets. Life has its ups and downs but you have to always push through and get back up. You have to accept the challenges and conqueror them. That's exactly what a Growth Mindset is about accepting challenges, making mistakes/failing but standing tall and not letting it bring you down.
